On an average day, the world’s poorest nations generally struggle. But the COVID-19 crisis may push them over the edge, rolling back years of painstaking progress, the UN’s trade body, UNCTAD says in its new 2020 report on Least Developed Countries. The coronavirus crisis is unprecedented, but it does show the enormous value of investing in building something called “productive capacities”. UNCTAD connects with one of the lead authors of the report, UNCTAD’s Rolf Traeger on what’s at stake for not only the least developed countries but for the world if we let LDCs slip further into poverty and do not help them build productive capacities.
