US 101's video: Mount Rushmore and the Meaning of Monuments - US 101

Mount Rushmore is one of America's largest monuments. But did it need to be created at all? This week on US 101, we look at the history behind Mount Rushmore and the meaning behind monuments in the United States. We'll learn about the Lakota Sioux and how land promised to them by the U.S. government was taken away to mine gold, the massacre which stopped Native American rebellion against the U.S. government, and why Mount Rushmore was created in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We'll also try to understand the larger meaning behind the creation of statues and monuments.
