The United Kingdom, Japan, and Italy—the Trio NATO—announced Friday that they are working together to develop a sixth-generation fighter jet that would compete with or outperform the greatest jets currently used by countries like China and Russia. Global Combat Air Program (GCAP) is the name of the ambitious project, which aims to create a next-generation fighter aircraft by 2035. NATO's new sixth-generation fighter jet program is urgently needed because of the potential external threat to the rules-based international order. This is to maintain regional security stability. The United States is also supporting NATO's new fighter jet development program which can enhance future interoperability with NATO and with our partners.
