SEA Camp Cook Islands sets sail! Meet our next generation of Cook Islands ocean guardians and scientists! Marine debris, ocean clean up, and careers in are some of the things these Kuki Airani tamariki learned yesterday from Dr. Ashanti Johnson and Dr. Nevada Winrow We enjoyed meeting fellow interested in the environment, climate change, marine issues, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). We were fortunate to hear from inspiring leaders! Jacqueline Evans of Office of the Prime Minister talked about her work with Cook Islands Marine Park - Marae Moana, climate change, coral bleaching and plastics Dr. Nevada Winrow, CEO of Black Girls Dive Foundation, connected us with the Nautilus Live so we could learn about deep sea ocean mapping in the Pacific and internships aboard the ship Natalie Sinclair shared her PhD research on Cook Islands and Pacific whale songs as it relates to their migration patterns and cultural heritage Rima Browne of the Seabed Minerals Authority shared experiences from her on ship research expedition with NIWA New Zealand Mii Nimerota, Director of the Centre of Excellence in Information Technology, shared opportunities in IT, robotics, cybersecurity, software and more! We learnt about our traditional navigation sciences for sailing, the variety of career pathways in fisheries, shark research opportunities in the Cook Islands, and so much more!
