Established in 1964 under the Red Cross Act, Cap 57 of the laws of Uganda, Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) is a membership-based humanitarian organization. In 1965, URCS became a member of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Operating as an auxiliary to the Government of Uganda, URCS provides crucial humanitarian support during emergencies. The national society collaborates with a diverse range of partners, including the Government of Uganda, the United Nations, Red Cross National Societies, Civil Society organizations, and private corporate entities. With a broad reach, URCS boasts over 500,000 registered members and volunteers nationwide. In the period from 2020 to 2021, the organization has impacted and reached over ten million beneficiaries.
