@Democracy, Monarchy & Catholicism: A Scholarly Analysis
Distinguished American historian Charles Coulombe speaks: "The fact is that ... in any revolution the vast majority of people are not interested in change. At any given moment, the vast majority of people just want to be left alone, firstly. And if they have any interests or loyalties they are for the existing order. Revolutions are brought about determined minorities who know what they want and are ruthless in getting it. And will not brook any opposition. And you are hard put to find a revolution, including the American revolution, that has brought about a better state of affairs than the one it replaced. Think about it. Even if the monarchy in question was one you would not want to live under, like the Manchu emperor or the Ottoman sultan, is Mao or Ataturk better? The American people were never taxed or regulated under the king, as much as they are taxed and regulated today. You question, why was the American Revolution needed in the first place? It's incredible what people are willing to put up with from a government they consider their own because of the ritual of voting. Because people go through that little ritual of snout counting, because people are given the illusion of control, they accept treatment that they would never accept from a hereditary monarch. If our constitution was altered in just one respect and the presidency was made a hereditary monarchy, with precisely the same powers outlined in the constitution, I guarantee you that he would not be allowed to exercise more than what is in the constitution because people have an immediate suspicion of anything hereditary. But they will swallow anything elected. Because it goes back to the delusion, the idea that just because I can vote, I count for something in the eyes of my masters. Every society has the rulers and the ruled. It's just the way it is, it's the way human society is always organized. You have a minority that rules and a majority that is ruled. What makes one society different from another is the nature of those rulers. It's better to be ruled by people who believe they are going to fry in Hell forever if they rule me poorly, than by those for whom you are merely a convenient, economic statistic to be milked like a cow. ... Many have the odd idea that you make the institutions and everything follows. That's not what happens. Institutions are products of a people, its culture, and their religion. The institutions we have today fit the American people like a glove. They are what we are. You may say, and I would agree, that our masters are disgusting; that the things they push are loathsome. But it's what we want, it's what we are. They reflect us. Not through the myth of voting, but simply because it is what it is. If the average American was not more or less content with what he's got, he'd do something about it. He doesn't. Everything fine, it's ok. And why should it be otherwise? The vast majority of Americans get three square meals a day. I'm not going to really believe we're in a recession until I see all the anti-obesity ads on television. The fact of the matter is that the system, as it has evolved in this country, does in fact fit our idiosyncrasy. It is what we are. You can say that it's terrible that we are dominated by anti-Christian values. Well yes, except that we have internalized them and that we really like them because they make life convenient. Why should we have to evangelize our neighbor when we can simply co-exist with him?"
