@Angelenos Celebrate their Roots; Honor Our Lady Queen of the Angels 2011
September 21, 2011. (Romereports.com) Los Angeles is a very modern city, but recently it decided to revive an old tradition. The city turned 230 this month. To celebrate, hundreds took part in a special procession to honor the city, but most importantly, its patroness: Our Lady Queen of the Angels. Charles Coulombe Queen of Angels Foundation (USA) "For about 100 years this was done under the Spanish, the Mexicans, the Americans and then sometime in the 1880's they stopped doing it." And so, the Queen of Angels Foundation, decided to bring that very tradition back to life. The procession started in the Plaza Church, which at one time, was the only Roman Catholic Church in L.A. Then, hundreds walked to the city's Cathedral to celebrate Mass and pray the rosary. Charles Coulombe Queen of Angels Foundation (USA) "It's a long time later and L.A has really grown up in a big big way. So today, we revive the custom, we celebrate Los Angeles' past, but most importantly its future." The city was officially founded on September 4th, 1781. More than 200 years later, the county of Los Angeles is the largest Archdiocese in the United States. With dozens of different ethnicities, the county's Archbishop says, Mass is celebrated in roughly 42 different languages. Nancy Iredale Queen of Angels Foundation (USA) "This Catholic community needs to transcend our ethnic rivalries and cultural triumphalism. We are all Angelinos today. We are all sons and daughters of Mary, Our Queen." It was a day that combined tradition, cultural unity and of course faith. But above all, it was a way to venerate the city's patroness.
