Uni-3d's video: A Failed Nuke Drops on Denver

http://uni3d.com/ - A failed nuclear bomb drops in on Denver! The bomb came crashing through the incomplete Spire building, and landed on the parking lot atop the Performing Arts Center in downtown Denver. This was a Visual Effects shot for a short film I began work on in late 2009. Part-way into it the idea of bombing a major US city, and one I live near and rather enjoy, just didn't seem so appealing, so I scrapped the short. It's only fitting to at least see this shot to completion, as it was heavily developed, being the first shot of the piece I created. All animation, simulations, etc. were created in Maya 2008. This scene had a handful of different simulations. For most debris; rigid bodies created using manually modeled or scripted shattering were used, in the (tens of) thousands. The Spire logo/sign were pushed around dynamically using projected textures and a cloth simulation. All smaller debris from the parking lot were created using instanced particles. The smoke/explosion pieces were stock footage purchased from Detonation Films. All layers were rendered through Mental Ray, final compositing being handled in Nuke.
