Shivaji Bhonsle(1630-1680) also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was an Indian warrior king and a member of the Bhosle Maratha clan. Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire . In 1674, he was formally crowned as the Chhatrapati (Monarch) of his realm at Raigad. Shivaji established a competent and progressive civil rule with the help of a disciplined military and well-structured administrative organisations. He innovated military tactics, pioneering non-conventional methods which leveraged strategic factors like geography, speed, and surprise and focused pinpoint attacks to defeat his larger and more powerful enemies. Panhala Fort is located northwest of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India. It is strategically located overlooking a pass in the Sahyadri mountain range which was a major trade route from Bijapur to the coastal areas. Due to its strategic location, it was the centre of several skirmishes in the Deccan involving the Marathas, the Mughals and the British East India Company. During the reign of Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur in 1489, Panhala was fortified extensively. They built strong ramparts and gateways around the fort which made it impossible to concur. Control over Panhala was very essential considering its influence on the transport routes connecting main land with the coast. Shivaji Maharaj had tried capturing the fort in 1666 but was unsuccessful and had lost more than 1000 men. The loss was tremendous. After waiting for 13 years, Maharaj decided to plan an attack on the great fort. It was a very courageous decision considering the last defeat. Kondaji Farzand volunteered to lead the attack. Surprisingly, he decided to take only 300 horsemen when he knew there are more than 1500 infantry within the Panhala Fort. Kondaji knew that capturing the fort in direct open land attack was impossible. Hence an alternate method was inevitable. He decided to camp at Ratnagiri and get all possible information on Fort Panhala. All detailed information including where the fortresses are, how many soldiers on each shift, how exactly is the surveillance distributed and such important information pieces were gathered. Almost 2 months went in the research and finally the fruits of all this pain were reaped. They got very crucial information, that the south of the fort has very less surveillance due to the straight valley down covered with thick forest. Kondaji decided to attack at night with only 60 men. Remaining 240 soldiers were kept at base of the fort for fighting with the enemy soldiers who would run towards the forest in search for getting help or informing alliances. The brave 60 men climbed the vertical fort wall in pitch dark night and reached the fort at midnight when Adil Shahi's troops were caught off-guard. The Maratha soldiers increased the shock in the enemy camp by making loud sound with bugle and clarion. Adil Shahi's soldiers hearing this loud noise assumed that they are attacked by a very large Maratha force. This false assumption made them run in panic. Marathas took advantage of this chaos and attacked all important areas including the palace of the fort's chief. Kondaji Farzand won against the chief in one to one battle; this made enemy soldiers run for their life.
