Folk songs of uttarakhand had its roots in the lap of nature. It has seen various phases of growth and has undergone lots of transformation during the course of time. It speaks about various festivals, religious traditions, folk stories and simple life of people of uttarakhand. Mangal song is one such folk song. Mangal Geets are traditional offerings/songs that are sung in the Garhwali and Kumaoni wedding ceremonies. They are sung by the women of both sides i.e. the bride and the groom’s family. These songs are based on the auspicious wedding of Lord Shiva and Parvati, where the groom is considered as Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu and the bride, is considered as Parvati or Laxmi. These are sung alongwith the purohits who keep enchanting shlokas in Sanskrit according to shastras during the marriage ceremony. The family members, relatives, and friends of the bride and groom sing the Mangal geets and usher blessings on them.
