भागीरथी व अलकनन्दा के संगम पर बसा है देवप्रयाग, ये स्थान लाखों लोगों की आस्था का केन्द्र है लेकिन इस स्थान पर आस्था रखने वाले लोगों को ये मालूम नही कि यहां कोई एतिहासिक नक्षत्र वेधशाला मौजूद है। नक्षत्रों की जानकारी रखने वाले महापण्डित चक्रधर प्रसाद जोशी ने, देश के पहले लोकसभा अध्यक्ष जी0वी0 मालवंकर की प्रेरणा से साल 1946 ई0 में करीब 2120 फीट की उचांई पर नक्षत्र वेधशाला की स्थापना की। इस नक्षत्र वेधशाला के लिए जर्मनी,इंग्लेण्ड व जापान से दूरबीनें मंगाई गई जो आज भी यहीं मौजूद है
