Mahatma Gandhi had visited Kausani in the year 1929 and he loved the place so much, that he called it "Switzerland of India". He stayed here for 14 days during which he scripted part of his book "Anasakti Yog" . This Ashram is a must visit place when you come to Kausani. Other than Anashakti Ashram, Laxmi Ashram or Sarla Ashram is also a place to visit in Kausani. this aashram was started by the discipline of Gandhiji named "Katherine Mary Heilenann". Lakshmi Ashram in Kausani is a Gandhian based Institute for girls and is aimed at making women of Kumaon self-dependent. Katherine left London to support Gandhi in his independence movements in 1931. This ashram is surrounded by a peaceful aura which is wonderful for the boarding school run by the ashram and is also an eminent center for rural women who are motivated. ---------------------- Lakshmi Ashram is a Gandhian Basic Education school for girls, as well as a center for the inspiration and practical training of rural community activists. It is also a base for voluntary work, and a place where women from rural areas can organize themselves to define and solve their own problems. The ashram is about half an hour’s walk by footpath from Kausani, the nearest roadside town. It is located in the middle hills of Almora District, in the Kumaon Division of a North Indian Himalayan region collectively known as “Uttarakhand.” In addition to Kumaon, this region also includes the Garhwal Division.
