VIP Financial Education's video: Financial Literacy is FINALLY Making it into Schools

We’ve talked often on this channel about the failings of schools when it comes to financial literacy. Well, it appears something is finally being done about this in Florida and hopefully more states will follow suit. Now, Florida has been all over the news for another school-related bill and we’re not going to be discussing that piece of legislation in today’s video, but we will be looking at the legislation that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed into law requiring that high school students in the state take a financial literacy course in order to graduate. This is great news for youngsters as financial literacy is something they’ll use every day of their lives as an adult. So what does the bill entail? Well, the bill, titled the Dorothy L. Hukill Financial Literacy Act, requires students to take a half-credit (or single semester) in personal financial literacy and money management. The course is required to cover basic skills such as how to manage a bank account, balance a checkbook, complete a loan application, and compute federal income taxes. The legislation also requires that the class teach high school students about local tax assessments, contesting incorrect billing statements, the basics of personal insurance policies, and simple contracts.
