Approximately 20% of woman and 5-10 % of men report being sexually abused as children. "Paavam" was a project initiated by Archana Sellathurai, Narvini Dery and Steve Cliff about 2 years ago, during the process of composing Archana's music album "Maraththi." A mutual friend of their's came forward and shared her story with them and challenged them to create content addressing child abuse as it is an unspoken, but widely spread issue, especially in the Tamil Community. She explained them how it took her nearly two decades to build the courage to tell her parents about what her own uncle has done to her for years and finally seek for help after suffering in silence. They couldn't even imagine the hell she went through and decided immediately to start talking about this and create awareness. Cinematographer Surenth Puvanarajah joined the project with no hesitation after listening to their purpose. They planned the music video over a year ago and faced nothing but setbacks as it was hard to find actors - harder than expected. People who agreed dropped out on set, after realizing the sensitivity of this theme. Luckily things eventually fell into place and they finally completed this project and are presenting it to you. It seems like the major delay was meant to be as recently a lot of bloggers and social activists are talking about child abuse and mental health and are trying to educate our community by working with various organizations, who are doing an outstanding job providing help and support to survivors. Please do not ignore anymore and break the silence. We have to talk and educate everyone around us starting with our own home.
