Vasili Sha's video: LOOKING UP: Studies for Ceilings 1550 -1800 - National Gallery of Art - Washington

IIn this video presented drawings for decorative ceilings of Churches and palaces of 16 European outstanding masters; below is their list according their place in the row of images. Under No 8 is the most fruitful of them – the Venetian architect and interior designer, Giacomo Quarenghi. By the invitation of Empress Catherine the Great in 1779, he arrived in St. Petersburg. He was praised in Imperial Russia by his numerous architectural structures, mostly in St. Petersburg and in a royal residence Tsarskoye Selo (now Pushkin). Among the most famous ones are the Hermitage Theatre, the Alexander Palace, and the Academy of Science. The Alexander Palace at Tsarskoye Selo and the English Palace at Peterhof are the best patterns of “Catherinian Classicism” in Russia and Palladian architecture in the world; the English Palace was destroyed in WWII. Under the reign of the Blessed Emperor Alexander I of Russia (1801-25) Giacomo Quarenghi, a Russian noble awarded with the Order of St. Vladimir, was named “Grand Architect of all the Russians.” He died 18 February 1817 (N.C. 2 March) in St. Petersburg and was burying in the Holy Trinity Alexander Nevskiy Lavra. 1.
