Welcome to Rottnest Island! Just a short ferry ride from Perth or Fremantle, this little paradise , home to the “happiest animal in the world “, the Quokka, will literally steal your heart! Here are 5 eco-fun facts about Rotto: 🚗 THERE IS NO TRAFFIC : Rottnest is a car-free island with less than 500 permanent residents and more quokkas than people. Only a few service vehicles are allowed on the island , so the best way to get around is by bike or electric scooter (which we loved sooo much!) 🐿️ QUOKKAS ARE A PROTECTED SPECIES: believe it or not just over a century ago quokkas were haunted for meat! Fortunately, this practice was outlawed in 1917 as Rottnest was given the protection of being declared an A-Class Reserve.  💐 NO CONFETTI FOR YOUR WEDDING: All fresh flowers to be used at wedding ceremonies on the island need to be given the green light by authorities before they cross the 19km channel to avoid any threat of contamination. Throwing flower petals, confetti and rice or using balloons is also off-limits: foreign waste and food spell trouble for native wildlife and the protected marine environment.  ☀️ RENEWABLE ENERGY ONLY: most of Rottnest Island's energy comes from renewable energy, generated by a wind turbine solar panels.  🧴WALK ON RECYCLED PLASTIC : there are over 45 kilometres of trails on the island featuring 27 bench seats and boardwalk sections all made from recycled plastic. The 27 recycled plastic benches alone represent nearly 430,000 plastic bags diverted from landfill.
