@Arta Greece - Άρτα Ελλάδας
Arta (Άρτα) is a city in northwestern Greece, in the province of Epirus, built on the ruins of the ancient town of Ambracia, on the left bank of Arachthos river. The city is well known for its Byzantine churches, its castle, its clock, important neoclassical buildings and, above all, the symbol of the city, its legendary Bridge. Arta is a city full of life, with charming pedestrian zones, modern shopping centres, cafès and bars. First and most famous landmark is the historical bridge of Arta, one of the most famous bridges of Epirus built in 1602–06. The bridge became famous because of the legend of the foundation, as the master builder had to sacrifice his beautiful wife, in order to finish its construction. The length of the bridge is 145 meters and the width is 3.75 meters. It has been rebuilt many times over the centuries, beginning with Roman or perhaps older foundations; the current bridge is probably a seventeenth-century Ottoman construction. The neoclassical building standing next to the bridge, built in 1864, has been restored by Musical-Philological Association of “Skoufas” and today accomodates the Folklore Museum of Arta. With a couple of euros you can visit the museum. On the left bank of the Arachthos River, just a few metres from the legendary Arta Bridge, is the ageless and imposing Arta Plane Tree, also known as Ali Pasha's Plane Tree. One of the oldest and most beautiful in Greece, it was declared a protected natural monument in 1976. Besides the famous Bridge, an other important attraction in Arta is the Byzantine Church of “Panagia Paregoritissa” (dedicated to the virgin Mary, the “Consoler”). This is a grandiose temple, dedicated in memoriam of the Annunciation of Virgin Mary. It was built within the years 1283 to 1296 A.D. by the ruler of Epirus Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas. The 13th-century Byzantine castle, which rises into view above sections of the ancient city wall, is an important attraction and still plays an active role in people’s lives. Dozens of happenings and events take place in the open-air municipal theatre near its entrance, where the clock tower stands. The Castle of Arta was built after the fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade in 1204 when the Komnenian dynasty founded the Despotate of Epirus centered on Arta. The internal of the Castle was partially modified into a Xenia Hotel that was eventually left to decay. Today it is an important cultural venue in the prefecture of Arta, hosting many events during the summer. The Wall Of Ancient Amvrakia is the most impressive sights in Arta. It was built to protect the ancient town from enemies, but it’s not known exactly when its construction began. The parts that remain show that it was an imposing wall, made with impressively large uncut stones. Modern Arta features well developed infrastructure with its heart beating on Skoufa square, a popular meeting point of the city. For those wishing to learn about the city there is the Skoufa Folklore Museum. Arta is a lovely place full of history that not many people have heard of. It isn’t on the tourist route but you should spend at least a day here to experience authentic Greece. The city of Arta offers so much, so it’s an ideal place for a city break or it can be visited as a day trip from Preveza. Let yourself be captivated by the legends surrounding this beautiful city in Epirus. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you like what you see, subscribe and click the bell to enable notifications for more travel videos. https://www.youtube.com/verynicetravel I really appreciate your support! ❤️❤️❤️ ----------------------------------- IMPORTANT NOTE: The content of this channel, including: videos and images must not be downloaded for the purpose of being re-uploaded to YouTube or another 3rd party website.
