Tara National park is located in western Serbia. It is a part of Dinaric Alps and covers an area of 183 km2. Its length is 50 km, and it is 22 km wide, with average height of 1200 m above sea level. This area is inhabited by the largest population of brown bears in Serbia. Due to its climate and isolation Tara preserved ancient species of trees such as Pancic spruce and other almost fossil species of plants. The highest point is Kozji Rid -1591m and the lowest 291m is at the lake Perućac. Vrelo River is the strongest fountain in the national park, which runs into river Drina after 365 meters. Tara is a typical forest area, and for its preservation and diversity of forest ecosystems one of the richest and most valuable forest areas in Europe. In forest sense Tara are covered with mixed forests of European Spruce, Silver Fir and European Beech (over 85 % of forest area) and specificity compared to other mountains of the Balkan Peninsula is the large number of relict and endemic forest species and plant communities. Special value and importance of the Serbian Spruce (Picea omorika), endemic and relict species, which is inhabits canyons and ravines of the middle course of the Drina River managed to survive the last ice age. There are 53 species of mammals. The most interesting are bear (Ursus arctos), and chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) which lives even on elevation of 291m. There are 135 species of birds. The most interesting are endangered species such are golden eagle (Aquila chryssetos), peregrine falcon and others. There are more than 251 species of mushrooms. Three of them are poisonous. Amanita phalloides is the most dangerous mushroom in Europe. Throughout the park there are numerous archaeological sites and monuments dating from the Neolithic period to modern times.
