Vic Yoder's video: Southern Pacific TOFC COFC - La Mesa Model Railroad Club

Southern Pacific's BALAT operated between Oakland and Los Angeles on a Tuesday thru Saturday schedule. In 1988, SP changed the route of this train from the Coast Line to the Valley via Altamont Pass and Tehachapi. This facilitated a scheduled pickup at Tracy with cars destined for Phoenix and points east that would be added to eastbound originating trains at LATC (Shops Yard) adjacent to the LA River near Mission Tower. Today's train consists of usual road power and caboose. Included are pig flats, well cars and two boxcars full of goods. It was far fetched to have a caboose trailing on an intermodal train in the late 1980s but due to a shortage of end of train devices it warranted the use of a waycar. All locomotives are equipped with Soundtraxx Tsunami / Tsunami 2 decoders and Current Keepers.
