Umakant and Ramakant Gundecha, affectionately known as the Gundecha Brothers are the flag bearers and the most renowed performers of Dhrupad – one of the oldest forms of Indian Classical music. This ancient form dates back to ~200 BCE – 200 CE and finds reference in the Hindu Sanskrit text Natyashastra. The Gundecha Brothers are presently the leading Dagarvani Dhrupad singers India and were awarded the coveted Padmashree in 2012. Born in Ujjain, they gave their first public performance in 1985 at the Uttaradhikar dance and music festival in Bhopal.
