American income and wealth inequality is back to levels not seen since the mid 1920s. This growing disparity is our greatest domestic problem. According to a recent Pew Research Center report, "The gap between America's upper income and middle income families has reached the highest level on record." The difference in wealth is even greater: Wikipedia reported that by 2014 the top 1 percent had 40 percent of the wealth while the bottom 80 percent had 7 percent -- and that estimate may be low. In a July column in The New York Times, columnist Nicholas Kristof reported that the "richest 1 percent in the United States now own more wealth than the bottom 90 percent."
