@VDT PRACTICES: USING TEXT with Robert Clark
Text is commonplace in Vincent Dance Theatre's work, sourced through interviews, written , and recorded conversations. Using text can balance a work between the abstract and literal, merging real-life with theatrical elements to evoke emotions, challenge perspectives, and connect to audiences through , , and storytelling.Performers might manipulate or edit text, sometimes presenting contrasting viewpoints to trigger a reaction or feeling. Or often, this text anchors our performances, used to create movement that interprets its meaning. Here, Artistic Director, Charlotte Vincent and Vincent Dance Theatre (VDT) collaborator Robert Clark speak about the use of in @Vincentdt work and processes. --- Vincent Dance Theatre (VDT) produces and distributes compelling and socially engaged dance theatre work on stage, on film and across online platforms. Driven and informed by an ongoing research process that explores the complex tensions between and , Vincent’s work embraces the voices of, and creates opportunities for, marginalised communities and is applied and explored through a wide range of innovative participatory opportunities including; professional development, mentoring, teaching and learning, social engagement and dialogue and debate events. VDT aims to enable creative agency – converting participants into audiences and audiences into participants – to move people and to make them think. Vincent’s work is researched in collaboration with targeted community groups and individuals, whose voices become embedded into the work, with participants often performing in the work. Vincent’s methodology is trauma informed, consciously inclusive and integrates professionals and non-professionals at every stage of the creative process. VDT uses its public platform to open up debate around crucial issues of our time -providing a space for voices that might not otherwise be heard, including children, young people and women. VDT makes significant claims for gender equality, equality of opportunity and social change and the organisation places safeguarding and a protective mindset at the heart of all its practice and operations. Vincent is a pioneer and vocal advocate for and working in the performing arts and a sector leader in developing and advocating for safe creative practice both with vulnerable groups and within the dance community itself.
