Violet Deliriums's video: The Ruts - Babylon s Burning guitar cover

This is my cover of the Ruts' song "Babylon's Burning" (1979). Because of the heavily reggae-inspired British punk and cross-cultural exchange of the late 1970s, I'd imagine that "Babylon" probably refers to Western empires that have plundered and dominated throughout the last several hundred years, burning and destroying whatever is in their way to get what they want and, at the same time burning inside because they know what they are doing is wrong (or at least they should know and are in denial). I played it on my deep-space black Fender Standard Stratocaster HSS with the bridge humbucker selected through my Fender Supersonic 22W amp's "Burn" (hi gain) channel set for some mild distortion (or heavy overdrive, with gain controls at 5 1/2 and 7, bass and miss cranked and treble rolled back to 6). I shaped the sound with a Keeley compressor (all knobs at 12 o'lock) and an Electro Harmonix Memory Boy delay set for a very slight slapback. One thing I really think about is palm muting -- maybe more than most guitarists -- because it really affects your sound and you can make some neat timbres and also vary it them gradually to build intensity or make sharp contrasts (as in this song). To record it, I played along with the mp3 with my computer speakers and amp huddled around a Samson CO1U microphone into my Mac's Photo Booth program, which reverses the image and I don;t know how to fix it.
