Violet Deliriums's video: Primus - John The Fisherman guitar cover

@Primus - "John The Fisherman" (guitar cover)
This is my cover of Primus' song "John the Fisherman" (1991). Most of Primus's songs are concerned with varieties of the everyday American asshole (e.g., rednecks, politicians, businessmen & their cubicle-farm sheep, soldiers, sexist stud boys & dirty old men, etc.) and in the lyrics they mock such behavior by presenting the characters dramatically and mimicking the things they might say in the lyrics. In those songs, we are meant to be disgusted by or laugh at the protagonist. However, a few of their songs are more narrative, telling the story of a social misfit or someone left behind by mainstream American assholery; for example, "Mrs. Blaileen," "American LIfe," "The Ol' Diamondback Sturgeon (Fisherman's Chronicles Part 2)," and this song. In other words, we are meant to identify with the protagonist in these kinds of songs. I played it on my deep-space black Fender Standard Stratocaster HSS with the bridge humbucker selected through my Fender Supersonic 22W amp's "Burn" (hi-gain) channel. I shaped the sound with a Keeley compressor (all knobs at 12 o'clock). To record it, I played along with the mp3 with my computer speakers and amp huddled around a Samson CO1U microphone into my Mac's Photo Booth program, which reverses the image and I don't know how to fix it. When he was young you'd not find him doing well in school, His mind would turn unto the waters. Always the focus of adolescent ridicule, He has no time for farmer's daughters. Alienated from the clique society, A lonely boy finds peace in fishing. His mother says "John this is not the way life's supposed to be." "Don't you see the life that you are missing?" And he says... When I grow up I want to be, One of the harvesters of the sea. I think before my days are done, I want to be a fisherman. Now years gone by we find man that rules the sea. He sets out on a dark May morning . To bring his catch back to this small community. He doesn't see the danger dawning. Four hours up, oh the ocean swelled and swelled, The fog rolled in it started raining. "The starboard bow." "Oh my God we're going down!" The do not hear his frantic mayday. And he says When I grow up I want to be, one of the harvesters of the sea. I think before my days are done, I want to be a fisherman. "I'll live and die a fisherman." Calling John the Fisherman.
