Violet Deliriums's video: Primus - Groundhog s Day guitar cover

This is my cover of Primus's song "Groundhog's Day" (1990). (See "NOTES" for more info.) I played it on my Fender Violet Deliriums ESM Signature Model Blacktop HH Jaguar (ESM = Explosive Space Modulator) which has Seymour Duncan SH-1 pickups, a killswitch, and some neato stickers on the pickguard. I ran it through my 1970s Silverface Twin Reverb with various effects. I used a few effects starting with a Boss ME-6 (my preset 4/1 to add a little reverb and compression), an Electro-Harmonix Little Big Muff for all the fuzz in the first half. In the second half I add more with the Line 6 DM4 ("fuzz pi" patch) coloring it, and then at the very end I click on the Phase 90 (set for "stun" at 9 o'clock). NOTES: Between verses you hear Claypool acting like he is a redneck character in a conversation with someone else. This is something he often does, and although it is unintelligible here, it is often the lyrics like in "Those Damn Blue Collar Tweakers," "My Name is Mud," and "Del Davis Tree Farm." Hint: He is not celebrating American redneck mentality when he does this. Claypool mocks them in order to make them appear ridiculous as a result of their parochial narrow-mindedness, racial bigotry, apathetic lives centered around entertainment products and partying, and willingness to resort to violence to solve problems. "Pay to play" is a reference to the LA scene in the 1980s, which required bands to put up cash to play in the clubs so that the club owners would minimize risk. It was then incumbent upon the band to draw the crowd, so they would have to go out and do all the advertising. The song "Stay Away" by Nirvana used to be called "Pay to Play" until Cobain changed the lyrics. Bob Cock is a recurring character in Primus videos like "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver," "My Name is Mud," and "Mr. Krinkle" (where he appears in the circus parade whipping the people that carry him). He wears an open-chested sky blue leisure suit and eats disgusting unhealthy food (like fake cheese nachos and pork soda) and is basically a cartoonized sleaze-ball womanizer, another theme in Primus's music (for example "Tommy the Cat.") They do this to make such characters appear disgusting and ridiculous. When I woke up this mornin' I felt a pang. I was hungerin' for some apple pie. Stumble in the bathroom, hung my hog a little bit. Washed the sleep out of my eye. Oh yeah, it's gonna be a fine day. (Ya know, I don't know. I kinda...) Scratched myself a bit. Poured me out a bowl-a Corn Chex. Closest thing I could find to apple pie. Lingerin' taste of toothpaste Made the milk go down a bit funny. But you know, them Chex they do satisfy. Oh yeah, this'll be a fine day. (Ha, ha, ha. Yeah...) So, after my mornin' rise-n-shine and eat-n-clean, Had my mind set to hit them streets. Drizzle from the night left cold puddles out. Had my black stomp-boots on my feet. It's my day. Yeah. Yeah, it's my day. My day! Since I was in knee pants my pop had tried to make me realize. If Iset my mind down to it I could be a big man in the public eye. So with my big blue collar on, I set out to find the easy way. What a nice cold bath it was when I found you had to pay to play. To taste the taste it's a tease that never would subside. The taste is strong but soured by my learned eyes. Well, if a woodchuck could chuck wood, he'd get down on his knees to pray.
