Violet Deliriums's video: Violet s MXR Phase 90 Demo of Tips Tricks

@Violet's MXR Phase 90 Demo of Tips & Tricks
This is a little demonstration of how I use one of one of my favorite pedals, the MXR Phase 90. I keep one on my "normal" pedalboard placed after the distortions in the modulations section. It is one of my main go to pedals when I want to sound extra crazy. GEAR USED FOR Van Halen, "Dance the Night Away" (Phase 90 before distortion) and the demo of Phase 90 after distortion: Fender Violet Deliriums ESM Signature Model Blacktop HH Jaguar Line 6 DM 4 Distortion Modeler MXR Phase 90 phaser Electro-Harmonix Memory Boy delay Fender Silverface Twin Reverb (c. 1973) You can see my "normal" pedalboard demo here (it has changes slightly since then): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfJjz4ZCUDo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCs2Cx9bCnU I learned how to use it by listening to the ways Eddie Van Halen and Tom Morello use it. They do not leave it on all the time, but turn it on at key moments and make the room spin, then turn it off before anyone knows what happened. Morello first used an Ibanez DFL Flanger, but by around 1999 he replaced it with a Phase 90. WHEN I USE PHASE 90 IN MY COVER SONGS: I really don't use this pedal very much because for me it is a special effect that pushes things over the edge. So I have to save it for special moments when I need something nutso. Sometimes I just follow what the recording does, but at other times I just know that it will make things sound wilder. (Please look in "Show More" under each video in the link if you want to know the other gear I used.) FOR RHYTHM GUITAR (1) Primus, "Groundhog's Day" (at the very end, set 9 o'clock): Here I just follow the lead on the recording. I am not sure if it is Les or Ler who has the modulation on (either a flanger or phaser), but it makes the ending sound wilder and more climactic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDY0N_yVduo (2) RATM, "Killing in the Name" (during two subsections of the intro, and then after the solo in the buildup): In this song, I actually used a flanger patch on the Line 6 MM4 (it was before I switched out my modulations section), but I could have used the Phase 90 as well. The reason for doing is to create sonic variety and to highlight certain sections. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUR3Es3y7q0 FOR STRANGE SOUNDS (1) Pink, "U + Ur Hand" (the scratching part in the bridge, set 12 o'clock): Here I thought, maybe I can use some Tom Morello techniques to get that DJ scratch sound, so I tried rubbing my hands on the strings. I decided that wasn't enough, so I added the Phase 90 and played with the settings until I got what I wanted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Jzscfq4m2I (2) The Fixx, "One Thing Leads To Another" (the synth-like sound in bridge, set at 12 o'clock): This is one I forgot about! I just used it to imitate the synth part in the bridge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_BMFwW1PsI FOR LEAD GUITAR Living Colour, "Funny Vibe" (guitar solo): The song is about how young black men are viewed as criminals automatically, which alienates them from mainstream American society. So I decided to try to sound like a pissed off alien saying, "What the fuck, yo?" I thought that the Phase 90 would help me do that so I eventually set it for "stun" (9 o'clock) and, after a lot of experimentation, decided to leave it on for the whole solo and click on a tremolo briefly to spin it out of control near the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAZTAITkO4Q
