The latest mega event that hit headlines the world over is the United Fighting Championship (UFC) that has now made Abu Dhabi its new home, after doubts cropped up regarding the UFC fights scheduled for August 2020 in Las Vegas, due to Nevada’s increasing COVID-19 case count. Since the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) had signed a five-year agreement with UFC to host one event per year, UFC soon found a new home to host its spectacular fights. But how it happened during a global pandemic is a commendable story indeed! COVID-19 put an end to all kinds of sports in 2020, literally. Next to no major events took place, from the Summer Olympics to the NBA and the F1. No one was willing to risk hosting large crowds that could be potential super spreader events, nor risk the lives of the sportsmen and women who are paid millions to play. This was the new normal across the world. However, Abu Dhabi had other plans. How did Abu Dhabi make it happen? Abu Dhabi introduced ‘The Safe Zone concept’ safety bubble by designating Yas Island as a safe zone. Yas Island reserved a part of its island just for sports and transformed it into a place where sports were allowed to be practiced in a safe environment, called the UFC Fight Island™. The initiative was an innovative way of how we could still see live events during COVID. Abu Dhabi introduced stringent safety measures on the island. No one was allowed to enter the UFC Fight Island™without a COVID test, and once inside the safe bubble zone, a test would be conducted every three days. This preemptive mechanism put in place averted sports from dying and UFC received a new lease of life . The UFC event was held successfully in July 2020 with over 100 UFC fighters flying into Abu Dhabi from around the world to participate in the fighting championship. The UFC matches were televised without an audience and broadcast across the world – enabling people to watch from the safety of their homes. And it was not just sports under control, the entire city of Abu Dhabi implemented several safety measures to control the spread of COVID. Abu Dhabi deployed the ‘Go Safe Certification’ which enforces global safety and hygiene standards across Abu Dhabi’s hotels, attractions, malls, hospitality facilities and public venues, and supports wider efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19, including widespread testing, city-wide sanitation, social distancing and enhanced healthcare services. Following the undisputed success of the inaugural series, the second event in the UFC Fight Island™ series at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island was held in September 2020, less than three months later, marking another historic first for Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi was now called the ‘fight capital of the world’. Adding to the history of the occasion, the event was held at the all-new Etihad Arena on Yas Island. Yet again, stringent health and safety protocols were in place at the Emirate’s latest world-class entertainment venue, underlining Abu Dhabi’s coordinated and collaborative response to COVID-19, as the Etihad Arena made its debut as the new international home of UFC.
