VivaVideography's video: Werner Herzog Q A: FITZCARRALDO and BURDEN OF DREAMS

@Werner Herzog Q&A: FITZCARRALDO and BURDEN OF DREAMS
Werner Herzog discusses his feature film "Fitzcarraldo" starring Klaus Kinski and the behind-the-scenes documentary film "Burden of Dreams," which was directed by Les Blank during the chaotic production of Fitzcarraldo, and filmed on location in the jungles of Peru. Werner Herzog discovered in the archives of The Vatican that the Catholic Church had used the same system of horse-powered turnstiles to erect the obelisk in Saint Peter's Square. Regarding "Burden of Dreams," Werner Herzog claims his famous line "Even People Lost Their Lives" was not referring to anyone dying during the making of the film. Instead, he was referring to a temporary hospital they set up in Peru to treat locals for free, and out of thousands of cases, an old woman ended up dying of anemia. He was also referring to a thief who stole one of the film's canoes and drowned when it capsized. The perception that he is willing to jeopardize the lives of his cast and crew on set is still lingering to this day. He also had to face a public tribunal in Germany, with accusations he had committed human rights abuses against the Peruvian native people. Amnesty International investigated and found no evidence, but the media did not report it. The myth has become bigger than the reality. Shot and edited by Viva Videography.
