The State Anthem of the Russian Federation (Russian: Госуда́рственный гимн Росси́йской Федера́ции, translation. Gosudarstvennyy gimn Rossiyskoy Federatsii) is the official national anthem of Russia. The tune was composed in 1939 by Russian Soviet composer Alexander Alexandrov, the founder of the Alexandrov Ensemble. The original lyrics were written by Sergey Mikhalkov who rewrote them later in life, following encouragement from President Vladimir Putin, and the current anthem was officially adopted in 2001. The anthem is regarded as one of the world’s finest, and regularly appears in the top 10 list of most popular national anthems.
