It was written by Peter Dodds McCormick (1834 – 30 October 1916) born in Port Glasgow, Scotland. The song was first performed in 1878 and became the national anthem in 1984, when it replaced God Save the Queen". The song is often sung at sporting events and accompanies the flying of the Australian National flag as represented in this video image.
