@Air on the G String by JS Bach from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major BWV 1068 US Air Force Strings
“Air on the G String” by Johann Sebastian JS Bach from the Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major BWV 1068 and played by The United States Air Force Strings. The original “Air” is the 2nd movement of the Orchestral Suite which was composed for three trumpets, timpani, two oboes, strings (two violin parts and a viola part), and basso continuo, but the “Air” only uses the strings and basso continuo (an instrument capable of playing chords such as piano, harpsichord, organ etc.). The popular “Air on the G String” is a later arrangement by August Wilhelmj (German violinist and teacher). The principal difference from Bach’s original is a transposition where the first violin part can be played entirely on the G string, i.e. the lowest one. The arrangement usually features the melody played by a single violin instead of the collective group of first violins. However, there are a number of other musical variations including: String Orchestra; Violin and Piano; Saxophone and Piano. This recording is of the original “Air” and was performed by the United States Airforce Strings comprising: 7 first violins; 5 second violins; 4 violas; 3 cellos; 1 bass; and 1 accordion representing the basso continuo. Bach was born on 31st March 1685 in the German town of Eisenach and became a prolific and skilled composer of Baroque period music. His works include the Brandenburg Concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Mass in B minor, two Passions, and over three hundred cantatas, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. Bach died on 28th July 1750 and is buried at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig - where he had spent the last 27 years of his life. The video image is a 1748 copy of the famous Bach Portrait by Elias Gottlob Haussmann painted in 1746. The original painting hangs in the upstairs gallery of the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) in Leipzig, Germany. The video was edited by Vuetunes.
