Vulture's video: Incubus 1966 - B W 74 mins

@Incubus (1966) - B&W / 74 mins
Incubus (Esperanto: Inkubo) is a 1966 black-and-white American horror film filmed entirely in the constructed language Esperanto. It was directed by Leslie Stevens, creator of The Outer Limits, and stars William Shatner, shortly before he would begin his work on Star Trek. The film's cinematography was by Conrad Hall, who went on to win three Academy Awards for his work on the films Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, American Beauty and Road to Perdition. Incubus was the second feature film primarily using Esperanto ever made. The first, Angoroj ("Agonies") appeared in 1964, two years earlier. The actors learnt their lines phonetically, and native Esperanto speakers (denaskuloj or denaskaj esperantistoj) are generally disappointed by the Incubus cast's pronunciation. The unsympathetic subtitle positioning, is due to the only surviving print being found with French subtitles in situ. The English subtitles were placed over the existing French. Kia is a succubus, luring men who have sinful habits and libertine inclinations to their final perdition, by way of a magical fountain. She tires of this, it's too easy, and these souls are going to Hell anyway. She wants to match wits and charm with someone who is good. So, against the advice of her sister Amael, Kia seeks out Marc, a man who has already faced death with courage, and is seeking the fountain for it's healing properties. After seducing Marc and spending the night with him, Kia finds that not only is Marc's goodness still intact, but she has been ravaged by love. In anger, she and Amael conjure a powerful incubus to destroy him. The incubus starts with Marc's sister, Arndis. Who will win the struggle for souls?
