Nicknamed 'Proud, Brave, Reliable' the Patrol Boat River (PBR) performed every mission imaginable on the waterways of Vietnam. Operating mainly on the Saigon river and the Mekong Delta, PBRs disrupted weapons ships. With enemy interference coming increasingly from the sea, the US needed a coastal surveillance force. Thousands were stopped and searched by the PBRs and the flow of arms into the country by the sea was finally strangled. As the war progressed, the PBRs became more sophisticated. For one, they gained electronic radars which could detect any slight irregularity on the water surface. This became essential during night excursions. PBRs also became heavily armed, so they could deal with the enemy when they came across it.
