For the broader U.K. market, stocks moved higher as data showed the U.S. economy added 171,000 jobs in October, well above a 120,000 rise expected by economists surveyed by MarketWatch. The unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9% from 7.8% in September, as was expected. With the U.S. presidential election around the corner, the numbers mark the last employment report before the vote and could affect the outcome, some market participants say. Among other notable movers in London, Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC shares UK:RBS -2.30% RBS -2.91% lost 1.3% after the bank said it swung to a third-quarter loss of 12.5 pence (20 cents) a share from a profit of 11.3 pence in the year-earlier quarter. The group net interest margin, the difference between what a bank takes in on loans and pays out on deposits, widened to 1.94% from 1.84%. "We are concerned by the slight increase in non-performing loans and lack of visibility for future profits for the taxpayer. The turnaround story at the moment is not credible and has much work to still undertake," said Atif Latif, director at Guardian Stockbrokers in a note. Other banks reversed after the U.S. data, with shares of Barclays PLC UK:BARC +1.02% BCS +0.36% up 2% and shares of HSBC Holdings PLC UK:HSBA -0.77% HBC -1.01% HK:5 +1.76% rising 0.3%. Oil firms also moved higher, as oil prices trimmed losses. Shares of Royal Dutch Shell PLC UK:RDSB -0.13% RDS.B -0.22% added 0.2%, while those of BG Group PLC UK:BG -1.14% climbed 0.9%.
