After such a successful opening round we now welcome everyone to the first official round of Challenge Your Editing! Thank you so much for everyone’s support and for those lovely editors who helped promoting the competition. There has been a great response of 68 Editors and 8 Judges who wanted to join the competition and I am therefore incredibly excited to present to you the first challenge! I have to admit I would count it as one of the harder ones, but this was competition was made for you to test your skills and improve your editing, so brace yourself! The task of the first round is: ENTRANCE YOUR AUDIENCE BY CREATING AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE. Alternate/Parallel Universe (OED) n. (a) (orig. and chiefly Science Fiction) a universe conceived of as existing alongside or in addition to our own, having many similarities to it but usually differing from it in some significant way; also fig.; (b) (in the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics) a universe regarded as actually existing alongside our own, albeit with no possibility of detection many-worlds n. an interpretation of quantum theory which states that all possible quantum worlds are realized and coexist in parallel with each other. Now what does that mean exactly? You as an editor are required to take two or more characters/storylines/settings/events from different or even the same games/game series and combine these in your videos by creating an alternate universe/story. Now let me be clear on specific criteria here: 1. Creating an AU is a MUST, in terms of judging this will be the major focal point 2. You HAVE to specify in your description what your AU consists of/what the storyline is etc – this will NOT be judged later on, but it helps us understand what you are trying to portray 3. Of course the common sense rule of NO STEALING OR COPYING from other participants applies in this competition 4. In more general terms you will be judged according to your quality of editing, creation of universe/story and overall entertainment value 5. As complicated and difficult as it may sound this round is not necessarily about masking or using extremely complicated effects/techniques, of course such editing will be rewarded during the judging process, but ANY way of creating an AU is completely acceptable in this round If it helps you to grasp the concept of an AU better, think of it as a very complex and multi-layered crossover story. This story can literally be about anything, from Kingdom Hearts Character set in a Mafia-setting of Hitman to the Inquisitor of Dragon Age being the god-like creator of the city Rapture from Bioshock. There is no limit to your creativity and I would encourage you to think very carefully about your universe! As you can see I tried to include some hints of what these videos might look like in the video, I hope that helps. A little note on the side, it might help to stalk some fanfiction archives and search for alternate universe stories to get some inspiration – I will not blame you for looking for some nice ideas but PLEASE to not copy other people’s stories 1:1, let yourself be inspired and create your OWN universe!
