The metre gauge mountain railway at Nilgiri uses a unique system called rack and pinion. It means the train has a set of notches on its underside between the wheels. These notches cling to a set of notches on the railway track between the two rails. The train ascends through mind-boggling slopes like 1:12 and reaches an altitude of 7228 feet, which is higher than the altitude of Darjeeling. This video shows the train ascending from the plains of Mettuppalayam to Coonoor using a steam locomotive. Between Coonoor and Ooty, the train uses a diesel locomotive.
