His programme tonight takes ‘variations’ as the theme and includes a selection from Beethoven’s catalogue of variations written during the final decade of the 18th Century. In contrast, Webern’s Variations were written in 1936 and the work's title is ambiguous. In a letter from that year dated 18 July, Webern wrote: ‘The completed part is a variations movement; the whole will be a kind of “Suite”’.
