WildFilmsIndia's video: Brown Barbet has a huge strong beak with which it can peck into hard wood to make nest holes

@Brown Barbet has a huge strong beak with which it can peck into hard wood to make nest holes
The Brown Barbet has a huge strong beak with which it can peck into hard wood to make nest holes. In this video, it uses this beak to fetch large Ficus and other fruits for its growing chicks within the nest hole. The food foraging trips are so frequent that the poor birds get tired from their summer-time hot weather activity. Summer-time nesting of the Green Barbet in a hollow tree trunk hole, in crowded busy Delhi city Summer-time nesting of the Green Barbet in a hollow tree trunk hole in a Bakain or Persian Lilac tree, in crowded busy New Delhi city. The barbet nervously looks around, hoping no predator is peeping at its entry to the nest-hold and noting its presence and location. When convinced, it proceeds to enter the nest hole, feed its chicks and carry away their poop, to trow afar. Frugivorous Large Green Barbet at its nest-hole... The Brown-headed Barbet or Large Green Barbet is an Asian barbet. Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a worldwide tropical distribution. They have bristles which fringe their heavy bills from which they get their names. The Brown-headed Barbet is an inhabitant breeder in India and Sri Lanka. It is an arboreal species which eats fruit and insects. It lays two to four eggs and nests in a tree hole. It largely feeds on mangos, ripe jackfruit, papaya, banana and similar cultivated fruit trees; hence it is called furgivorous. Its territory is urban and country gardens though it tends to avoid heavy forest. It nests in a suitable hole in a tree that it will often hollow out, like a woodpecker. A pair will take it in turns to hatch the eggs and they often speak with each other using their Kura, kura calls. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail and a usually large barbet at 27 cms. The adult has a speckled brown head, neck and breast, with a yellow eye patch. The rest of the plumage is green and bill is thick and red. Both male and female look alike. The Brown-headed Barbet is an inhabitant breeder in India and Sri Lanka.
