This video concerns tragic events of fifty years ago, at the 1964 Indianapolis 500. It was a time of revolution at the Speedway and like most revolutions, this one featured tragedy and grisly, untimely demise. Dave MacDonald was an Indy rookie seemingly destined for stardom in 1964, a sports car racing star of uncanny ability. And he could have become as legendary as some other young drivers in this race, A.J. Foyt, Johnny Rutherford, and Bobby Unser. Eddie Sachs was a fan favorite at Indy, a 37-year old veteran driver who had come within a few laps of winning the 1961 Indy 500. Eddie LOVED a camera and was an engaging and popular public speaker. This video was inspired by a recently published book by Art Garner, “Black Noon.” If you find this subject in the least interesting, I highly recommend Garner’s book.
