In other words we will see diet for a lactating mother. Number one, Drink Plenty of liquids - just water would do . 100ML. of breast milk contains 89.97grams of water, 7.4g carbohydrates, 4.2grams of fat and 1.3 grams of protiens. So you clearly see the that water is the major component of breast milk. SO just drink enormous amount of water. Drinking water and juices is supposed to boost lactation. It increases the total milk volume per feed. and Foods To Avoid Number Two, Eat Lot of apples & pomegranates Eat atleast 1 apple a day and also drink 1 glass of pomegranate juice while you breastfeed your baby. However, eating fresh apple or pomegranate or juicing it, is a better alternative to taking supplements or pomegranate fruit extracts while breastfeeding. Number Three, Have a balanced diet of rice / wheat, dal, vegetables, greens and curd Foods to avoid Have a combination of cereals (rice, whole wheat, broken wheat, ragi, jowar and oats) for both meals. Whole grain foods to include in lactating mothers diet : whole wheat flour , Oats and broken wheat daliya. Brown rice , quinoa, ragi , Museli etc. Number Four, Have Frequent intake of small amounts of simple low fat/calorie food Have small, frequent meals, 3 major meals and 2-3 minor snacks per day Number 5, Drink 3 to 4 glasses of milk especially cow milk Cow milk has calcium and EFA. It promotes lactation. In fact, by consuming cow milk during lactation, you will help your child avoid developing an allergy to cow milk. Add at least two to three glasses of cow milk in your diet. Number 6, Consume Garlic, almonds(4), fenugreek (methi) leave, spinach, oats, pear and guava regularly Garlic is considered the best food to increase breast milk, as it is well-known for boosting lactation in nursing mothers. Almonds are rich in Omega-3 and Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps to heal itching caused by post pregnancy stretch marks. Fenugreek seeds are known for boosting breast milk supply. Chew on the sprouted seeds along with a glass of milk to prevent post-delivery constipation. It enhances your milk quantity. Spinach and beet leaves contain iron, calcium and folic acid. These are essential for recouping anemic mothers. Oatmeal is loaded with energy. It contains fiber and is good for your digestion. Guava is one of the nutritious tropical fruit rich in high-profile nutrients. Number 7, Dinner to be light and early Have early and light dinner comprising of milk, proteins and Carbs. Make sure you eat the right foods, sleep well and take adequate rest. Now that we have seen Foods to include in diet plan for lactating mothers. Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy At the same time A lactating mother needs to eat carefully. She cannot eat certain type of foods yet since some foods are difficult to digest and some foods are not good for the baby. Here are some foods that are better avoided Indian diet plan for lactating mothers. Number one, Strictly avoid Spicy & Oily foods also restrict Cruciferous vegetables and sweets Your child does get a taste of everything you eat so it is better to avoid spicy and strongly flavored foods. Avoid having too many fried and oily foods. Oily foods are heavy and hard to digest.Ghee and oil should be used in moderation while cooking food for a breastfeeding mother since she doesn’t have much activity and this can lead to weight gain. Vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and asparagus are cruciferous. Avoid them. These are difficult to digest and can cause infant colic and gas. Legumes like rajma, chana and soya beans should also be avoided for the first 2-3 months. Number 2, Say no to aerated drinks Try not to rely on aerated drinks to quench your thirst as they only contain artificial sugar and calories. Packaged juices are fattening too. Hence it is better to have home made fresh juices instead of buying packaged juices. Number 3) Avoid Caffeinated drinks Caffeine is best avoided as it is a diuretic and will only make you rush to the washroom more often. They also cause heartburn and nausea. If you really want to have tea, try herbal tea Number 4 No Alcohol & Cigarettes Alcohol contains nicotine and toxins which can prove to be harmful for the baby , thus it is better to avoid drinking while you’re breastfeeding.
