İİztuzu Beach is one of the most beautiful Mediterranean beaches with a 4.5 km long located near Dalyan, in the Ortaca district of the Province of Muğla. İztuzu beach is one of the rare beaches, which forms a natural barrier between the fresh water and sea water. It is one of the main breeding grounds for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta Caretta) in the Mediterranean and therefore is called as ‘Turtle Beach’. A line of wooden stakes on the beach indicating the nest sites was drawn in order to prevent damage of loggerhead sea turtle eggs. According to the decision taken in 1988, the beach is opened to the public only during the day, and visitors are asked to keep silence and to turn the light off in order to avoid disturbing the nests. There is also a treatment center on the beach providing a treatment of injured turtles. It is forbidden to carry out any construction works apart from the changing cabins. In addition, it is prohibited to bring to the beach pets such as cats and dogs in order to protect from damaging of Caretta Caretta eggs.
