In the ensuing battle, the Nawab's army suffered heavy casualties and was forced to retreat. The British victory at Plassey marked the beginning of British colonial dominance in India. It allowed the East India Company to establish control over Bengal and other parts of India, and to expand its economic and political power. The battle also led to the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of British influence in India, ultimately leading to British colonial rule over the Indian subcontinent.
