The top government official emphasised that as India celebrates its hundredth year of independence, the country should be self-sufficient in all aspects of metro construction while also being able to meet the needs of other countries. "Metro is the need of urban transport, and in 25 years, when the country's 100th year of independence is completed, Metro will have achieved expansion in at least 100 cities, extending the network up to 5,000 kilometres," he added. In India, 721 km of Metro network is operational in 18 cities, and construction work on a 1,058 km route length of new Metro network in 27 cities is currently underway.
