This 320-meter-long tunnel was dug on Tuesday, while another 430-meter-long tunnel was already completed. This tunnel is part of the Mumbai-Delhi Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, which is expected to be partially completed by the end of next year. "The final 3 metres or so thick wall had to be opened up in order to create this 320-meter-long tunnel." We used 200 kilogrammes of explosives for controlled blasting. Because the use of TBMs would have been prohibitively expensive, we resorted to the traditional method of using explosives. "There is another 430-meter-long tunnel on the south end that was dug open in early June-July," said a DFCCIL senior official. Before the explosion, the area was barricaded, and people were standing 150-200 metres away. As part of the countdown, sirens wailed twice to signal the start of the explosion. The hillock was then blasted open with a remote control. After the explosion, several litres of water accumulated inside the tunnel, which used to be seeped during rains over the years. Soon after, the light at the other end of the tunnel became visible, and Mumbai finally got a new tunnel on the western outskirts of its metropolitan region after years of waiting. According to the engineers, the height of the tracks from the roof of these two tunnels would be 11 metres or so, making it the tallest ever. The tunnel's average height from ground level is approximately 5.3 metres. The DFC is designed to transport double freight trains at high speeds, with power cables supplying electricity from two 25000 volt lines. Now that the tunnel of approximately 5 metres in height has been constructed, the engineers will dig further down all the way to ensure that 12-13 metres of height are reached from the top. They will also level the entire path of the tunnels as well as their approaches. This rail line runs parallel to the National Highway, and it is connected to the Virar railway station via a perpendicular road. The authorities will build a vehicle overbridge here, while the freight corridor will run perpendicular to it towards Vaitarna. They will cover the sides of the hillock with wire mesh at the same time to keep it from falling. There will be 25 major bridges, 5 major roads under bridges, 194 minor bridges, 11 road over bridges, and 9 viaducts on the JNPT-Vaitarna stretch. The girdering of one of the viaducts that crosses the Ulhas River will begin in the coming months. They collected 14.50 lakh cubic metres of stone from the blasting work, which will be used to strengthen the tracks.
