Kolkata, which enjoys the distinction of being India's first subterranean metro, is about to add another feather to its cap with the construction of the country's first underwater tube in the district beneath the Hooghly River. The underwater tunnel will connect Howrah and Kolkata with the Metro system. By 2023, the project is scheduled to be completely operational. According to Mithun Ghosh, the site supervisor, over 80% of the work on the East-West Howrah Metro station is completed, and the full-fledged service could begin in 2023. "The station is being built at a depth of 33 metres beneath the Hooghly River. Eighty percent of the work has been completed, with the remaining twenty percent to be completed. By 2023, it will be operational "Ghosh explained. "Important passage work has also been done," he noted, "bearing in mind that if a technical problem arises inside the water tunnel region, passengers can be escorted out using the special way."
About the Tunnel
1. It's a 520-meter twin tunnel with one going east and the other going west.
2. The 16.6-kilometer East-West Metro project's underwater tunnel is a critical link.
3. The East-West Metro project's tunnelling covers 10.6 kilometres of the 16.6-kilometer line, including 520 metres beneath the river.
4. The station is being built at a depth of 33 metres beneath the Hooghly River.
5. Passengers will be able to evacuate the tunnels through walkways in the event of an emergency.
About the Project
1. Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation is building the East-West Metro line in Kolkata (KMRCL). Since 2009, the project has been ongoing.
2. The 16.6-kilometer section will contain 12 metro stations, six of which will be underground and the remaining six on elevated rails.
3. Howrah to the west and Salt Lake to the east are connected by this metro project.
4. The undersea tunnel is being built at a cost of Rs 60 crore.
