The much-awaited water taxi, which was meant to be launched in March 2021, will finally be operational from the first week of January. Here’s everything you need to know: Who will operate the water taxis? The Mumbai Port Trust, Maharashtra Maritime Board and CIDCO have come together for this project. The license to operate the service has been handed over to two private companies—Infinity Harbour Services LLP, West Coast Marine and another organisation of wooden boat owners at Gateway of India. What is the route? The water taxis will ply from the Domestic Cruise Terminal in Mazgaon to Belapur, Nerul, Vashi, Airoli, Rewas (near Alibaug), JNPT, Karanjade, and from International Cruise Terminal in Mazgaon to Elephanta Caves. How many people can it accommodate? Infinity Harbour Services has a fleet of four boats—a 50-seater, a 40-seater, a 32-seater, and a 14-seater, whereas West Coast Marine has two 12-seaters and a 20-seater. What are the timings? The water taxis will run all days of the week between 8am to 8pm, even during the monsoon, says Sohel Kazani of Infinity Harbour Services LLP to CNT India. They will operate thrice a day, with boats plying in the morning and evening and afternoon. “The frequency totally depends on the demand. If the demand is high, we will have boats running every 30 minutes,” adds Kazani. What’s the travel time? The water taxi travels from Mumbai to Elephant and JNPT in 15 minutes, and from Mumbai to Belapur, Nerul, Vashi and Rewas in about 25-30 minutes. How much will it cost? The fare from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai is expected to be between Rs1,000 and 1,200 per passenger, while the fare to JNPT and Elephanta is likely to be Rs750. “The fares are currently high because some of the taxis are luxury commercial boats. But these rates will come down with the number of trips, and with newer boats with more efficient designs and engines,” says Kazani. The tickets for water taxis run by Sahakari Sanstha are likely to be much cheaper—Rs350—however, they will take longer (about an hour) to cover the distance.
