Jackson's supporters formed he Democratic Party who opposed John Adams and the anti-Jacksonian factions, which emerged as the Whigs. Jackson called himself the "Champion of the Common Man" and Jacksonian Democracy was characterized by expansion rights for the common man, such of voting rights or suffrage for white men, not just men with property and expansion of education in the form of freee public schools. Also, there was opposition to a national bank, which was dismantled. Jackson took on the Spoils System, the practice of giving government jobs to supporters, family and friends. Government jobs were not just reserved for the elite. Jacksonian democracy promoted the executive branch at the expense of Congress and sought to broaden the public's participation in government. Advances were made for the common man, but only white men.
