George Washington was the first American president, commander of the Continental Army, president of the Constitutional Convention and a gentleman planter. Washington was born on February 22, 1732 at Pope's Creek, Virginia and died at age 67 at Mount Vernon, Virginia He only had about 8 years of formal schooling and was largely self-taught in various disciplines. Washington was so good at mathematics, that he became a paid surveyor at age 16. At 26, he married Martha Dandridge Custis, a widow who already had two children. Washington never had any children of his own. There is a story that Washington chopped down a cherry tree as a boy and confessed saying "I cannot tell a lie." This story is probably a myth.
