In the Machinist,... the book 'The Idiot' a Novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky is shown a few times in the movie. (Christian bale) character (Trevor Reznik) has suffered a traumatic event in which he experiences mock execution, which means, he tortures himself by not being able to sleep, which caused an acute change in the way he lived his life. I.e., insomnia, loss of appetite, delusions and most of all guilt.
