M. Butterfly è un film drammatico del 1993 del regista David Cronenberg, basato sull'omonima pièce teatrale di David Henry Hwang, liberamente ispirata ad un fatto realmente accaduto. La storia è ambientata a Pechino nel 1964. René Gallimard è un diplomatico del consolato francese che viene trasferito con sua moglie da Parigi alla capitale della Cina. Durante una festa assiste alla versione della Madama Butterfly di Puccini eseguita da una cantante dall'aspetto vagamente androgino dell'Opera di Pechino. Incantato dalla sua interpretazione, Gallimard decide di incontrarla e scopre che....
